AN OFFBEAT PARADISE
Dooars is a fertile alluvial region that extends up to three districts of Darjeeling, Coochbehar & Jalpaiguri. It is home to nearly six nationally acclaimed sanctuaries and parks, which conserve and inhabit the richest population of Himalayan fauna. The animals found are tigers, elephants, sambhar, barking deer, spotted deer, hog deer, wild pig, and bison. Jaldapara is a paradise for bird watchers. It is one of the very few places in India, where the Bengal florican is sighted. The other birds to be found here are the crested eagle, Pallas’s fishing eagle and shikra, and lesser pied hornbill. Python, monitor lizards, cobras, geckos and about 8 species of freshwater turtles have also found sanctuary here.
Places to Explore in Dooars
Jaldapara National Park
This park holds the highest rhino population in India after Kaziranga National Park in Assam. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1991 and National Park in 2012. It encompasses luxuriant vegetation and a rich variety of wildlife. Elephant safari is preferred by the people staying at Jaldapara overnight. The jeep safari is available in the morning and in afternoon.
Considering the traditional migration pattern of the mega herbivores through the forest corridors, the ecological boundary of Chilapata is well spread out along the banks of Bania and Torsha Rivers that bring in the fresh monsoon alluvials, thus support and protect the grassland ecosystem and the astounding diversity of flora and fauna of the park.
Gorumara National Park
It is nearly 75 kilometers from Siliguri. A stay at a resort in here for leisure in the greenery of nature and resting a few days and nights in the midst of forests, rivers, and wildlife will positively instill new life and inspiration to all. Rare one-horned rhinoceros, herd of bison, leopard, spotted deer, and plenty of peacocks can be spotted in Gorumara National Park.

HOW TO REACH DOOARS
To visit Dooars, you have to reach the nearest airport (Bagdogra Airport), the nearest railhead (New Jalpaiguri Railway Station) or the nearest bus stand (Tenzing Norgay Bus Terminus). After that, any reserved/public vehicle will take to Dooars, directly to the resort/forest bungalow you have booked with the help of the travel agency.
BEST SEASON TO EXPLORE DOOARS
Dooars is best explored during the season of summer, spring, and winter. During monsoon, the forests experience heavy rainfall. Hence, your chances of enjoying elephant safari or jeep safari are slim. But if you plan on indulging in a romantic escapade, then renting a government lodge or a room in a resort during rainy days in the middle of the forest is perfect.
